. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AS AN IMPERATIVE OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS IN THE HIGHER

Abstract

The article aims to analyse the concept of "academic integrity" and its application in Ukraine and countries of the European Union. The research methods include an analysis of legislative norms aimed at promoting academic integrity and a study of successful European practices for addressing violations of academic integrity. Additionally, measures proposed by the Ukrainian academic community to resolve this important issue are discussed. The article offers a descriptive overview of academic dishonesty among Ukrainian students and suggests ways to encourage academic integrity within Ukrainian universities. Results: Legislative changes establishing academic integrity in Ukrainian higher education institutions are shaped by the Law of Ukraine "On Education," which sufficiently defines the concept. European countries have their own practices for combating and preventing violations of academic integrity. Because of the specificity of the Ukrainian education system, virtually 100% of domestic students engage or have engaged in cheating or let other students copy their work despite being familiar with the concept of "academic integrity". Common violations include plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, bribery, and biased assessment. Notably, there are differing expectations and levels of responsibility for academic integrity depending on the role in the university hierarchy; teachers, researchers, and students all have a specific set of rules they are to follow. In Ukraine, academic integrity policies are typically implemented at the university level, with institutions creating regulations or codes of conduct and organizing events dedicated to the problem of academic dishonesty. All these policies are often reflected on university websites. The practical significance of the study: Understanding academic integrity as imperative for the educational process in Ukrainian higher education is emphasized. Implementing academic integrity principles can elevate the Ukrainian higher education system to European standards, fostering an environment conducive to intellectual and spiritual development among students and scholars.
